Medsphere releases source codeHospital electronic records vendor Medsphere Systems Corp. has substantially changed its business model, releasing on the open source market the source code of its OpenVista clinical information system. OpenVista Clinical Information System (CIS) 1.0 Beta is a cross platform application based on C# and GTK#/ GTK+. CIS runs on the MS and Mono .NET frameworks. It is based on the design of the VA's Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS) along with image viewing, and other commercial enhancements. CIS will be Medsphere's technical platform for the new pharmacy and nursing modules.

OpenVista® CIS is a cross platform client application for interfacing with the Veteran Affairs' VistA system (an Electronic Health Record (EHR)) and systems derived from VistA, like OpenVista Server. The emphasis is on replacing the previous Delphi, win32 only client, VA Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), with a client written in a modern language and with a focus on issues such as i18n, cross-platform support, etc.

There is another component, called OpenVista Vitals. The shared library piece (Medsphere.OpenVista.Vitals.*) is used inside of CIS to provide its vitals functionality, and also used in the OpenVista Vitals application. OpenVista Vitals is designed to take vitals for several patients at a time, for instance for all patients on a Unit, while the CIS part is designed for single patient access.

The Aliso Viejo, Calif.-based company previously sold a commercialized version of the VistA information system developed at the Department of Veterans Affairs. VistA’s source code has been available for free for many years.

New management took over MedSphere last November, bent on becoming a truly open source company, says Rick Jung, COO. Now, the company is giving away the clinical and server software and will generate revenue by providing support and expertise to make the system work in a client’s organization.

“It’s no longer the case that MedSphere sells a proprietary license,” Jung adds. “We’re trying to do as we say and say as we do. We’re trying to be as openly collaborative as possible.”

That means software developers and others can download the clinical system and server source code and do with it as they wish. Medsphere asks, however, that they communicate updates to the company so they can be shared with others, Jung says. Medsphere also may adopt ideas it learns from others. “What we’re doing with this release is saying, ‘We now truly are an open source company,’” he adds.
