E-mail Print PDF
Listen ProjectNurses with good information literacy competencies are able to provide evidence-based nursing practice resulting in positive patient outcomes. Most nurses, however, do not possess necessary attitudes, knowledge, and skills in information technology, nursing informatics, and information literacy.

Patients, and patient care, suffer!
Employers suffer!
Nurses suffer!

The Learning Information Seeking and Technology for Evidence-based Nursing practice (LISTEN) project is designed to improve information literacy competencies of student and professional nurses. They are doing this by preparing:

  • a series of online learning modules,
  • web-based resources, and
  • interactive opportunities to learn more.

Listen project

The LISTEN Project is designed for adult learners who have:

  • varying professional backgrounds
  • different learning styles
  • diverse aptitudes, knowledge, and skills

The LISTEN project defines information literacy as the attitudes, knowledge, and skills to:

  • recognize you need information
  • confidently seek information
  • reliably access information
  • critically evaluate information
  • professionally apply information

Did you know that nurses must possess the skills to extract evidence-based information from online computer resources in order to provide the highest quality nursing care? In other words, nurses must be information literate. Did you also know that in the absence of information literacy skills, evidence-based practices cannot be implemented? The LISTEN (Learning Information Seeking and Technology for Evidence-based Nursing practice) project aims to address these issues and then some.

The LISTEN project is a 3-year study funded by HRSA. The purpose of the LISTEN project is to improve information literacy competencies among student and professional nurses by using individualized learning strategies. The LISTEN project is a series of online learning modules designed for adult learners who have varying professional backgrounds, different learning styles, and diverse aptitudes, knowledge, and skills for information technology, information seeking, and information application.

The LISTEN Model:

Participants of the LISTEN Project will first take a pre-program survey. Next they will complete Modules 1 (Information Seeking/Information Technology) and Module 2 (Information Application/Information Technology).† Modules are designed to be completed online at the participantsí leisure.† If participants choose, group training and classes will be offered at various times.† Once Modules 1 and 2 are completed, participants will be asked to complete a post-program survey.† Continuing education credits will be offered.
