Hospital Themed Computer Games

E-mail Print PDF
Although not really related to medical informatics, yet these hospital simulation games do give you a peek at what happens in a hospital. I list a few of these simulators here.

Theme HospitalTheme Hospital is a simulation computer game developed by Bullfrog Productions and published by Electronic Arts in 1997, in which the player designs and operates a hospital.

The game is set in a hospital, and requires the player to build an environment which will attract patients with comical complaints, illnesses, emergencies, and diseases. The game has a somewhat dark sense of humour, which is similar to that of Theme Park in many ways. The player has no direct control over the patients that wander the hospital, although gameplay largely centers on influencing their actions in one way or another. The player does, however, have the ability to pick up any staff member in the building and move them to a different area (to speed up their movement from place to place) and to expel any patients from the hospital (if they are being a nuisance, causing rowdiness or about to die and affect the hospital's statistics).

Hospital TycoonHospital Tycoon is a single player video game developed by Deep Red Games and published by Codemasters.

The game lets the player manage a hospital. Each different hospital is staffed by medical teams and is packed with ill patients. The player needs to manage the staff, ensure patients are cared for and have the correct treatment facilities. As time progresses, new equipment will need to be built in order to cope with incoming patients.

911 Paramedic "911 Paramedic" is part of Legacy Interactive's Real Life Game Series. In this game you are the paramedic on call. You'll have to treat patients with a variety of ailments. But you won't have to do it alone. You can use your PDA, which has lots of information on it.

The game has three modes of difficulty. Even the easiest level is very challenging. You'll have to act quick, because the more time you use points will be deducted from your peformance rating. If you need help you can ask for hints, but points will be deduted. The graphics are realistic, so be ready for blood. The game gives you a feel for the pressure a paramedic feels. It'll teach you a bit about what to do in case of an emergency.

ER"ER" Game Description: "ER" is based on the popular TV series, and promises to build upon the drama of the show. You are a new intern at the hospital are challenged with small problems, like bruises, and major emergencies like gang violence. Like the ER TV show, medical issues aren't the only situations you'll encounter as you work to gain prestige in "ER." There is also romance and ethical issues that you'll have to work through.

"ER" Game Features:
  • Voice and likenesses of ER cast members including Noah Wyle, Mekhi Phifer and Sherry Stringfield.
  • Full real-time 3D environments and characters with 360° camera rotation.
  • Create your doctor, with 6 different fields of medicine in which to train.
  • Be challenged with a variety of disorders and emergencies.
