Taking the Big Bang Approach

E-mail Print PDF
BigBangBold visions are difficult to attain in health care because they require long-term leadership, sustenance through setbacks and failures, as well as the courage to make and uphold difficult decisions. Not every health care system has the resources and leadership to make that happen. This is a story of one that did. Allina’s CEO, Dick Pettingill, talks about their journey to implement an electronic health record at 11 hospitals and more than 65 clinics in four years as a “bet the company” decision.

Who loses the EMR adoption race???

E-mail Print PDF
Who loses the EMR adoption raceOnly one in five, or 20 per cent, of American doctors uses electronic medical records, the New England Journal of Medical reported this month, and less than nine per cent of practices with three or fewer doctors use them. In Canada, according to the 2007 National Physician Survey, fewer than 10 per cent of doctors have switched entirely from paper to electronic records, though about a quarter use some combination of the two. The Conference Board of Canada last year released a survey of a dozen countries that confirmed information technology in Canada's health-care sector is in critical condition. In Australia, 79 per cent of doctors use electronic records. In the U.K., it's 89 per cent, and in New Zealand, 92 per cent.

Your Doctor at your finger tips...

E-mail Print PDF

FreeMDFreeMD® is an electronic doctor that conducts an interview, analyzes symptoms, and provides expert advice -- for free. FreeMD.com is not a diagnostic program; it is a triage program.  The purpose of FreeMD.com is to help consumers decide when and where to seek a physician evaluation (and ultimately a diagnosis).

Triage is about sending the person to the right place at the right time, given a combination of symptoms.  Simply put, triage is a risk assessment about symptoms.  Triage takes advantage of the fact that people with serious symptoms are more likely to have a serious condition.  Every time you go to the emergency room, the first thing they do is a triage evaluation.  After performing a brief interview, the ER staff determines your potential for serious illness.  If your potential is high, they see you fast.  If your potential is low, you have to wait.

The Benefits of Evidence-based Medicine in EHR Systems

E-mail Print PDF

Evidence-based MedicineWhen integrated into an electronic health record (EHR) system, evidence driven decision support is presented to the physician at the point of thought, providing crucial evidence-based literature that promotes timely and informed medical decision making. Further integration with a single platform solution that includes an electronic prescribing module provides the physician with objective, medication therapy decision support at the point of prescribing. Evidence-based medicine is often admired but seldom practiced.  It is rarely practiced because few physicians have the time to critically appraise the medical literature; an unfortunate reality considering the impact on quality of care, and the fact it could be changed.

An article by Tom Doerr, MD Founder and Chief Medical Officer of Purkinje.

Open Source initiative for Drug Research

E-mail Print PDF
Open Source Drug DiscoveryIf you thought the adoption of open source was restricted to only software—web servers, code development, and operating systems— then think again. The open source wave could soon power drug discovery initiatives in the country. A decentralised, web-based initiative is emerging that would enable scientists from laboratories, universities, institutes, and drug companies to work together in discovering new drugs for diseases like tuberculosis (TB), malaria, various types of cancer, AIDS, Chikungunya, Kala-azar, dengue fever, etc. Not only would drugs be made available to the public at affordable prices, there are monetary gains for the participating researchers in the form of awards and prizes.

Being 'SMART' when implementing an EMR.

E-mail Print PDF

SMARTPerhaps you have heard some of the nightmare stories about EMR implementations. You have certainly heard about the disasters and train wrecks. It seems the negative gets the most press. In reality, however, thousands of EMR installations have been successful and are providing increased productivity and revenue to physicians’ practices. So it is of critical importance that we identify the necessary factors for a successful EMR implementation. An excellent article by Tripp Weeks, President of XLEMR, discussing EMR implementations from the vendor's point of view.
